Side Effects of Whey Protein




What is Whey Protein?
Before knowing the side effects of whey protein, we must know about what is whey protein. Whey actually is a liquid, that is left behind after milk is soured and whey protein is a bi product of cheese manufacturing procedure. So we can say that it is composed compound of protein, which is obtained from whey. Whey Protein is a perfect source of protein, hence widely used as health supplement.

Although it is very important to measure the amount of protein, one should consume through his or her diet, because excessive amount of protein may cause various side effects.

Below find some of the common side effects of whey protein:

  • Lactose intolerance is one of very common side effects due to whey protein. As it is made out of milk, containing about 5% to 6% lactose (which is sugar of milk). So people suffering from lactose intolerance may not be able to consume whey protein, else they may suffer various symptoms like abdominal bloating, abdominal cramps, diarrhea etc.

  • High doses of whey protein may cause Ketosis, that increases the level of ketone bodies in the blood, which could damage the liver. 

  • Excessive amount of whey protein may also damage the kidney. Formation of kidney stones is a very common side effect of whey protein. 

  • Some studies have proven that overdose of whey protein may cause Osteoporosis, which lead an imbalance of minerals in bones.

Best Whey Protein Dose:
To escape off these serious or common whey protein side effects the doctors or physicians recommend to take around 1 gram or lesser protein per pound of a body's weight daily. The Athletes may consume maximum of 25 grams of protein per day while bodybuilders may consume maximum of 150 grams of whey protein per day only if they do heavy exercise daily.
